GR was still marveling at the novelty of having his own Pokemon partner. Despite living his entire life around Pokemon, this was somehow different. He was quickly finding that Rowlet was also different; the other Pokemon he'd worked with had been already trained, or had been part of domesticated herds under the watchful eyes of his parents. The little owl Pokemon was quiet and generally well-behaved, an easy first partner and ideal for GR's research going forward, but after the initial getting-to-know-you period, GR had discovered that his Pokemon had a proud streak that made training difficult (and had confounded GR's attempts at giving him a name, because Rowlet staunchly refused each one).

Right now, they were playing ball - it wasn't quite catch. GR would wing a ball as far and as fast as he could, and Rowlet would intercept it and kick it back. More than once GR had had to duck as Rowlet's powerful kick had sent the ball a little too close to GR's body - they were working on that.

GR let loose another throw, and the sound of wings preceded a mighty kick. "I don't know, how about Bob," he suggested as he jumped to catch the ball, clearly exasperated. That earned him a hoot from Rowlet that sounded almost like the owl Pokemon was tutting. Bob was right out. "I don't see you coming up with any ideas," GR teased, throwing the ball in the opposite direction this time. Rowlet didn't kick the ball back this time, and GR heard it thud on the ground in the distance.

He was almost concerned, starting to jog in that direction, when Rowlet appeared, ball in one foot and leaves in another. The little Pokemon tossed both at GR, cooing softly. "What are these then?" GR mumbled, reaching to pick one out of his hair. They certainly weren't from Rowlet's Leafage move. A quick search on his phone revealed that they were juniper leaves, silvery gray - almost ghostly, oddly enough, and GR's brow scrunched as he regarded Rowlet, who was now flitting around after a bug. "How do you feel about Juniper?" he called, wondering if Rowlet had actually taken up his teasing challenge.

"Row, row-let!"

"Juniper it is, then," GR agreed, bemused but pleased they were coming together.

Sometimes training was explicit, and sometimes it was implicit. Today it was explicit - GR knew that at some point in the possibly very near future, he would need to handle large herds of Pokemon, and he'd need Juniper's help corralling them and keeping them from stampeding or otherwise hurting themselves or others. The last thing he wanted was to drag Juniper into a situation like that unprepared, and while he was definitely considering adding some more Pokemon to their team to help out and keep them all safer, he needed to make sure Juniper was ready for anything. Right now he considered Ominous Wind to be his Rowlet's most powerful and also most finicky move - the owl pokemon had a good handle on Leafage as well as his other moves, but he lacked power and control on this one.

"Now to the left!" GR called, and Juniper trilled his answer before loosing a chilling wind on the 'herd' of leaves he'd created with Leafage. The idea was to create barriers and encourage motion to move the leaves from one end of the field to the other, not unlike behavior a Herdier or similar Pokemon would exhibit. And since the move they were working on could also trigger stat boosts for Juniper, they could use it for a little longer before getting exhausted.

Floating on the breeze Juniper had created, the majority of the leaves fluttered gently down into the bare earth near the fence that marked out this field. "I think that's quite enough for today, don't you, Juni?" GR held out his upper arm for the Rowlet to land. "Think how much more exhausted you'd be if those leaves were all Tauroses," he quipped as Juniper let out a tired row. "We'd better head back before Dr. Kingston misses us." GR waited a few beats, letting his partner start to get indignant at the lack of reward, before pulling a treat from one of his pockets and tossing it up for Juni to catch. "I'm just yanking your chain," he laughed, wincing as his partner squeezed his shoulder with sharp talons. "You did a good job today."
